IBH Link S5++
The IBH Link S5++ is a cost efficient alternative to conventional PLC to PC connections over Ethernet. Normally, connecting a PLC to a PC over Ethernet requires a CP communication processor in the PLC rack. As integration in automation technology continues to increase, a connection from the PLC to a PC is needed more often than ever, and communication processors such as Siemens CPs or Ethernet components from other manufacturers are the usual way to provide it.
The IBH Link S5++ is a compact, robust Ethernet converter in a 15 pin sub-D housing. It connects through a switch or hub, or directly to a PC with a standard network adaptor.
Standard TCP/IP
The protocol used is standard TCP/IP, so you get the full benefit of Ethernet: remote maintenance through a standard router, VPN connections, and direct internet connectivity.
Software support
All required drivers for STEP 5 V7.16 or higher and for S5 for Windows® are included. It can also be used with the IBH OPC Server. If you support S7-300 and S7-400 equipment alongside your S5 panels, S5/S7 for Windows® covers both generations in one package.
HMI access
S7 HMI devices can read and write variables in the S5 PLC using the RFC 1006 protocol. The FETCH/WRITE protocol is supported as well.
Programming interface
Alongside the programming capabilities, an application programming interface for HMI applications is included. Samples for Windows operating systems are supplied in Visual Basic, Visual C, Visual C++, VB.NET, Visual C#, Delphi, Java and Excel.
Other ways to connect to an S5 PLC
The IBH Link S5++ is the right choice when you want the PLC on your network, for remote maintenance through a router or VPN, or for S7 HMI access. If you only need to reach the PLC from a laptop at the panel, there are two simpler options:
- IBH USB-S5-Adaptor – connects a PC USB port directly to the 15 pin AS511 programming port, powered from the PC.
- IBH S5 Current Loop Converter – the serial option, for a PC with a true COM port where the PLC supplies the 20 mA loop current.
OPC UA connectivity
To bring S5 data into MES, ERP or SAP systems over OPC UA, the IBH Link UA module and the IBH OPC UA Server/Client software both use the IBH Link S5++ to reach S5 controllers that have no Ethernet port of their own.
